Agent Carter Season 2

Image
I just finished up Agent Carter Season 2 and overall it was kind of a disappointment. Season 1 grabbed me and held my interest for the entire season.  Season 2 feels like they wanted to make a movie and stretched it out into ten overly long episodes instead.  It doesn't feel like they actually were trying to write it as a TV show. The episodes flow together but no individual episode actually has a good payoff and it bugged me a lot.  The end of each episode felt very arbitrary.  I forced myself through the season because I enjoyed the first one so much but I didn't really like it. I would love to see them take another swing at the franchise for a third season as long as they don't follow this format again.  Season 2 was a big letdown.

The Man in the High Castle Impressions

I heard great things about The Man in the High Castle on Amazon streaming and since I'm a prime member I took a look. The premise and the worldbuilding are really interesting.  Essentially, the Allies lost WWII so Germany and Japan divided up the United States and now occupy them permanently.  This is 15 years after that, with tensions rising between Japan and Germany while a resistance group is sneaking around with film reels that have footage of the US winning the war. I really like the world they've set up but after a few episodes I had trouble connecting with any of the characters.  I haven't been able to get invested in any of them fully. It would have been enough to keep me going because of the worldbuilding but then I started feeling really squeamish.  I mean, we're talking WWII axis tactics which are just brutal and gross.  It freaks me out because it's based on things they actually did. So I tapped out.  I gave up.  This show might be ...

DareDevil Season 2 Review

Image
DareDevil season two is so much better than season one!  It's on Netflix and if you made it through season 1 you definitely need to go watch season two! Where season 1 was full of inconsistent pacing and quality, season two is good all the way through.  I really came away from season one feeling very "meh" about it.  I wasn't sure if I would come back for season two but a friend convinced me to at least give it a shot and watch the first episode.  He was so right. Season two picks up and gets moving so much faster now that we have all that annoying origin story out of the way.  At this point I realize I just hate superhero origin stories.  They tend to be boring and take way too long.  Season one was basically one long origin story.  Season two tells an actual story with the characters. Speaking of characters, The Punisher is super interesting.  I've never read about him before, I just kinda knew he existed.  This incarnation o...

Calamity Review

Image
Calamity is the third book, and the conclusion of, The Reckoners trilogy.  It wraps everything up very nicely and overall it's a really good book. The Reckoners has become one of my favorite series written by Brandon Sanderson.  The basic premise is that a star showed up in the sky and suddenly a bunch of humans all gained superpowers at the same time.  Unfortunately, anyone who uses their powers gets corrupt and turns evil.  So, it's a superpower world with no heroes. The Reckoners are a group of humans who set out to take down the superpowered "epics" by learning their weaknesses and exploiting them. That's where the series starts but by this third book we know so much more about epics, their powers, how their weaknesses work, and that it's possible to fight through the evil to some extent. It's super hard to write about this book without getting into spoilers and I don't want to spoil it for anyone.  But, I highly recommend this series. ...

Little Mobile Time Wasters

Image
I love mobile games but unfortunately for me most of them are little time waster games.  I love the ones that really dig in and try to do something new and, honestly, I browse the app store every Thursday for new releases but most games aren't this. A few weeks ago I had a run of Thursdays where nothing looked interesting.  So... I resorted to the "Top Charts" gaming section and picked up a couple games there I hadn't tried. Mostly these were duds but a few of them have been fun enough to keep playing. Alto's Adventure is a low key take on infinite runners.  You're a skiier going fast down a hill trying to catch caribou (or something) and your only controls are tap to jump or tap and hold to backflip.  If you're looking for a new infinite runner or just a game that's fun in small 1-2 minute bursts then Alto's Adventure might be for you. Goblin Sword is a sidescrolling platform/adventure game.  It has some basic fighting and platforming ...
