Geek to Geek - S1E13 - VR (HTC Vive)

Image
Virtual Reality (HTC Vive) In this episode: Void bought an HTC Vive! Don’t know what that is? Great! That’s why we’re doing this episode! We want to introduce you to virtual reality gaming. Since not everyone (Beej included) has had an opportunity to experience VR, live vicariously through Void while Beej incessantly questions him about the technology. Playing the Scully to Void’s Mulder, Beej plays (is) the skeptic and questions everything Void knows about VR. First off: is this a fad? What is the HTC Vive, anyway? Is it all inclusive, or is it a PC peripheral? Honestly, who is this technology for? What is the future of virtual reality? Or at least, where does it seem to be heading? Should naysayers/skeptics buy it now or wait? Geek to Geek - S1E12 - Audiobooks - “These Are The Kind Of Voices I Do!”

Audiobooks! In this episode: We talk about how we got started with audiobooks, and not surprisingly, we both started with free trials to Audible that got us hooked on the format. Multiple places to get them. Our favorite is Audible, but you can also try Overdrive (ask your local library for free access!), iTunes, and good ole CDs and cassette tapes (that’s why they’re called books on tape, after all). We discuss the pros and cons of each. Audiobooks help us make our mundane tasks more fun and interesting while keeping us engaged in books we want. Narrators make a big difference, and we can get through hard-to-read books because their performances make such a difference. S1E8 - I’m Not Allowed To Play Hearthstone On The Toilet

Blizzard Games In this episode: Blizzard games have been a part of our lives since we were kids. Now, as adults, we are still loving and playing Blizzard games. From the original Warcraft to The Lost Vikings to Overwatch and whatever comes next, we will probably be playing Blizzard games our whole lives. Games like Warcraft got us hooked, Hearthstone being on every device we own keep us connected, and new takes on old genres like Overwatch keep us coming back. Blizzard breaks down existing game genres into their fundamental parts, builds them back up into a new product, and then polishes them until they shine. S1E7 - I’m Going To Be Walking Around All Afternoon… And I Want That Corndog

Image
BACKLOG In this episode: We love so much stuff! Honestly, we love pretty much everything! So we need a system to organize it all because our free time is limited. Void has a fantastic queue system that takes the pain away: just pick what’s at the top and hit the ground running. Make a list of all the media you want to consume, and then start working your way down it. (Yes, it’s more complicated than that, but that’s why we talk about it in the show!) Wunderlist works great for organization. Weekly Geekery: Void - Empires of EVE: A History of the Great Wars of EVE Online / Wunderlist Beej - Pokemon: Omega Ruby Health Hack: Instead of calories, think about much would you would have to work out to burn off that cake? Still Quizzing Still Up

As I mentioned yesterday, I'm having a crazy week of work.  I had a bunch of projects land at the same time, which is always a blessing for money but a curse for my sanity and sleep schedule.  I've been working 16 hour days basically the entire week. It doesn't leave much room for gaming.  But I do need to take the occasional break to clear my head.  Usually a break is catching up on twitter for a few minutes or listening to part of a podcast while I'm eating a fast meal. But 10-15 minute gaming breaks can be super refreshing mentally.  So, I've been playing a lot of Quiz Up!  I might dig into some other iPhone games I have waiting on my phone already, but for the moment Quiz Up is keeping me sane.  It's really easy to do short sessions and it takes my full attention. It's amazing how much better I can work after a quick gaming break.  Clearing my mind with breaks every few hours let's me keep being super productive and last through thes...
