Star Wars Aftermath

Star Wars Aftermath by Chuck Wendig is the first novel in the Path to the Force Awakened series.  Basically, starting with this one, there are novels coming out that fill in some of the timeline between the Return of the Jedi and the Force Awakens.

As you all probably know by now I love Star Wars, so I picked this up on release day and had it finished by the end of that weekend.

This is the first really good book in the new canon universe of Star Wars.  The others so far have filled in gaps between movies that we already know, but Aftermath truly gives us new information on how the galaxy is progressing after the fall of the Emperor, Darth Vader, and the second Death Star.

I've read all the new canon novels as they've been released, but you can honestly skip them all and jump right to Aftermath.  It's the best use of your time.

The galaxy is in turmoil after the events of Return of the Jedi and the rebel alliance is in the process of becoming the New Republic.  The Empire is shattered into pieces, but it still has strength that's dangerous.  Everything is standing on a knife edge and this book shows the first steps of what happens next.

By the end of the book there's an ensemble cast that I have already come to love.  I really hope they get a chance to write more books with these characters.  My favorite new character by far is Mr. Bones.  It would be spoilery to say who and what he is, but he kicks ass.

If you're a Star Wars fan this is a great jumping on point to get into the new canon expanded universe.  I highly recommend it.

    Interesting. Yours is the 1st positive review of this book that I've seen, and I've seen many. I wonder what about it made you like it when so many others complained that it was poorly plotted, with -- lots-- of --hyphens-- that -- chopped -- it. Up. Like that. Becuz choppy. Is where it's at -- don't you know? so between poor plot and weird punctuation and style throughout.... not many seem to like it.

      It definitely has it's own style, but I didn't let the book drag out. I think I read it in 2 nights back-to-back. I think there are interesting scenes throughout the book but it really comes together in the last fourth of the book.

      I think it brings an interesting and diverse ensemble cast together by the end and could lead to more, and better, books in an ongoing series.

      I'm also a huge Star Wars fan and I love things that expand the universe. This is one of the only books in the new expanded universe that actually covers a time period that hasn't been officially covered yet. That definitely weighs into my opinion of the book.

Besides video games I also regularly play board games when I'm hanging out with people face to face.  My brother, my wife, and I end up playing a lot of 3 player board games, but sometimes we get other players involved too. Games of the Year 2022: In Conclusion

This running Games of the Year list has been an interesting experiment.  I decided to start this series right as we were shutting down the Geek to Geek podcast as a way to keep creatively broadcasting some gaming thoughts out into the world.  I learned a few things from sticking with it this year. The main thing I learned is... I just don't have as much desire to broadcast my thoughts out in public as I used to when I started this blog or when I started podcasting.  I still love to have in-depth discussions about current games and general geekery, but I feel less and less need to broadcast those thoughts widely.  Honestly, it's been over a decade of blogging and podcasting at this point.  It would be more surprising if my relationship with the media landscape hadn't  changed.
