Heavensward Leveling Woes

This still isn't my full review of Heavensward, but I need to vent a little bit.

The story in this expansion is great, I have fun every time I get to do main story quests.  But, the experience curve in Heavensward is crazy.



There is so much downtime between levels and since story content is level locked it gets annoying quickly.

I would pay good money to just skip leveling and be able to play the story quests of this game without being interrupted.

I want to see the end of the story, but I really don't like grinding levels in MMOs.  It's not my thing.  I hope this doesn't turn me off of the game permanently.

    I totally agree. I'm really into the story, but after hitting level 55, it's been much harder to progress. I wrote a bit of a disgruntlement on my newest Heavensward post, too. It's the one downer part of an otherwise good expansion so far.

      It's my only real complaint about this expansion. If they got rid of the level grind I would have loved everything about Heavensward. As it stands, it's really souring my overall impression of the expansion.

    I found that if I did every quest that I could find I didn't run into any level-gating issues. I did have to run 3 leve quests to get to 58 and then and then another 2 leves to get to 60, but that was it. Had I done more dungeon running I wouldn't have even needed that. But yeah... it does feel pretty slow on the 1st job since there's this kind of "ah! gotta be 60!" feeling, but now on my lower jobs that I'm bringing up slowly with just the clan hunts, they feel fine as to leveling speed so far.

      I haven't done many dungeon runs or hunts that weren't required by the story, but I've done literally every quest that I can access in the expansion. I still keep running into level gating issues, especially after level 55.

      I'm 58 right now and stuck again. I have half a level to get to 59 but I have no quests available at all in all the Heavensward zones.

      And this is with only playing when I have rested xp too.

    I only played with rested xp, I only did the dungeons when required by the story, and I think I did an extra Vault run with a guildie once, but that was it -- single run-throughs of everything else. And I didn't hit a gate until just shy of 58 as mentioned above. I dunno what to tell you. have you gone back to CWH? A ton of new quests opened up in there at about level 56, then DF had about 20 more also. And of course, Churning Mists I did everything, then went through the Aery, and then about 15 new ones popped up, with several of those being the beginnings of 3-4 quest chains. I also made sure to do my daily hunts each day, and those were a decent boost too.

      There's also a short quest chain in Mor Dhona that opens up at 54 too.

Besides video games I also regularly play board games when I'm hanging out with people face to face.  My brother, my wife, and I end up playing a lot of 3 player board games, but sometimes we get other players involved too. I realized I haven't talked much about what I've been playing in the world of board games, so here goes: Ticket to Ride - We own 3 different base versions of Ticket to Ride, 2 expansion sets, and an extra map set.  We love this game.  This is the game that gets the most overall table time when I'm playing board games with friends.  It's super accessible but still holds fun for people who have been playing the game for a long time.  I recommend this as a great beginner board game for anyone. Masquerade - A hidden role game where roles are constantly switching hands.  You're limited in actions on your turn and can only take one action.  This means that a lot of the time you're not entirely sure what role you currently have.

Games of the Year 2022: In Conclusion

This running Games of the Year list has been an interesting experiment.  I decided to start this series right as we were shutting down the Geek to Geek podcast as a way to keep creatively broadcasting some gaming thoughts out into the world.  I learned a few things from sticking with it this year. The main thing I learned is... I just don't have as much desire to broadcast my thoughts out in public as I used to when I started this blog or when I started podcasting.  I still love to have in-depth discussions about current games and general geekery, but I feel less and less need to broadcast those thoughts widely.  Honestly, it's been over a decade of blogging and podcasting at this point.  It would be more surprising if my relationship with the media landscape hadn't  changed.
