Gears of War 3 has been out for a few weeks but I put off writing about it until now.  I've been playing it off and on since it's release because I really wanted to like it.  The problem is... I don't.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad game.  Unfortunately, it's just more of the same.  I liked Gears of War and it's sequel a lot but this third installment isn't doing it for me.

The problem is that it plays exactly like Gears of War 2.  Granted, now there's four player co-op, a couple new guns, and some new enemies... but it all feels like it's been done before.  Probably because it has.

There are a few other new features.  Horde mode, one of Gear's crowning achievements, has some added base building features.  Beast mode now let's you play as the enemy killing the humans.  Overall, the whole package is tied into a nice online system too.

But I have to be honest.  If you didn't absolutely love Gears of War 2 then do not spend $60 on this game.  There's nothing new here.  I paid full price and I regret it.

    Yaknow, everything I hear about this game makes it sound like it would make a great DLC for Gears of War 2.

    And the problem with the game is still that the company knows all too well they can do this, and people will still buy it at full price. My brother did it, and he's having a blast, but you're not getting anything fundamentally different than 2 and if anyone says they bought it for the story I am going to burst my sides laughing.

    It would have been a great addon or DLC or even expansion pack. The $60 price tag is just so steep.

    The story had a final conclusion for the series and even though I had played all the games I still felt almost no emotional connection to the characters. I guess I'm kind of glad I saw it through to the end... but the story wasn't all that good.

Besides video games I also regularly play board games when I'm hanging out with people face to face.  My brother, my wife, and I end up playing a lot of 3 player board games, but sometimes we get other players involved too. I realized I haven't talked much about what I've been playing in the world of board games, so here goes: Ticket to Ride - We own 3 different base versions of Ticket to Ride, 2 expansion sets, and an extra map set.  We love this game.  This is the game that gets the most overall table time when I'm playing board games with friends.  It's super accessible but still holds fun for people who have been playing the game for a long time.  I recommend this as a great beginner board game for anyone. Masquerade - A hidden role game where roles are constantly switching hands.  You're limited in actions on your turn and can only take one action.  This means that a lot of the time you're not entirely sure what role you currently have.

Games of the Year 2022: In Conclusion

This running Games of the Year list has been an interesting experiment.  I decided to start this series right as we were shutting down the Geek to Geek podcast as a way to keep creatively broadcasting some gaming thoughts out into the world.  I learned a few things from sticking with it this year. The main thing I learned is... I just don't have as much desire to broadcast my thoughts out in public as I used to when I started this blog or when I started podcasting.  I still love to have in-depth discussions about current games and general geekery, but I feel less and less need to broadcast those thoughts widely.  Honestly, it's been over a decade of blogging and podcasting at this point.  It would be more surprising if my relationship with the media landscape hadn't  changed.
