World of Warcraft Crashing

I've been writing about my thoughts and impressions from Cataclysm a lot.  What I haven't been writing about are the constant black screen crashes that WoW has been giving me.

When I play WoW this is what my typical night looks like.  Start WoW, play until WoW glitches my computer, hard restart because I have no other option, play WoW again until crash, hard restart, give up, do another activity.  The whole process usually takes less then 2 hours.  A few nights I've gotten lucky and gone for 3+ hours without the glitch, but that's rare.

I know it's not a hardware defect.  I have a great system that is extreme overkill for a game like WoW.  I don't have glitches in any other games that I play which are more graphically intense either.  It has to be the way WoW is interacting with my graphics card or graphics drivers.  It seems like a lot of people posting with the problem have a 200 series Nvidia graphics card.  The sad part is WoW works fine on my crappy laptop, but I'm not going to play on that at home when I have an awesome desktop (which plays other games perfectly).

I didn't want to mention it until now because I thought tech support would help me out.  After scouring the forums and e-mailing blizzard tech support I'm basically at the point where they've given up on my issue.

If this gets fixed in a patch soon I'll keep playing, but I'm really sick of it.  I'm about ready to give up on the game, not because of the gameplay, but because it continually crashes my system.

    Delete WoW, clean registry and download a new client from scratch?

    Also have you tried running the repair tool?

    I am sorry for telling you this, but I had a similar problem 6 months ago, it got fixed and i can't remember for the life me how... :(

    That is just one of the many many things I've tried. I tried everything the tech support guys asked me too, and they basically came to the conclusion that they didn't know and it was probably nvidia's fault. It's unfortunate, but I think I'm just going to unsubscribe and be done with it.

    You need to update your video drivers. Seriously. The latest patches add significant graphics requirements that will crash a graphics card like there's no tomorrow if you have out of date drivers. So, go to nvidia.com and get the latest drivers for your card.

    That said - this could also be an overheating issue. If it only happens after a few hours it's possible your system is overheating. It's one thing to have a good computer, it's another to not have proper ventilation. The nvidia Catalyst Control Center will let you see what temperature your card is running at.

    The important thing to note is that in a game with 12 million+ people, there's not a single problem you can have that someone else hasn't seen first. If you have already reinstalled from scratch, it isn't the game - it's your computer or something in your environment.

    The first thing I do when my computer crashes is update my drivers, so I'm good on that front.

    I'm beginning to think it's an overheating issue. I downloaded a good hardware monitoring software and started checking my internal temperatures. Everything is fine except the graphics card is running hot. It's still under warranty, so I'm going to see if I can get a replacement.

Besides video games I also regularly play board games when I'm hanging out with people face to face.  My brother, my wife, and I end up playing a lot of 3 player board games, but sometimes we get other players involved too. I realized I haven't talked much about what I've been playing in the world of board games, so here goes: Ticket to Ride - We own 3 different base versions of Ticket to Ride, 2 expansion sets, and an extra map set.  We love this game.  This is the game that gets the most overall table time when I'm playing board games with friends.  It's super accessible but still holds fun for people who have been playing the game for a long time.  I recommend this as a great beginner board game for anyone. Games of the Year 2022: In Conclusion

This running Games of the Year list has been an interesting experiment.  I decided to start this series right as we were shutting down the Geek to Geek podcast as a way to keep creatively broadcasting some gaming thoughts out into the world.  I learned a few things from sticking with it this year. The main thing I learned is... I just don't have as much desire to broadcast my thoughts out in public as I used to when I started this blog or when I started podcasting.  I still love to have in-depth discussions about current games and general geekery, but I feel less and less need to broadcast those thoughts widely.  Honestly, it's been over a decade of blogging and podcasting at this point.  It would be more surprising if my relationship with the media landscape hadn't  changed.
