The Holiday Gaming Season

With Halloween on the horizon you know it's almost the holiday season.  In the world of gaming this means tons of new releases, holiday marketing pushes, and special events in our favorite games.  MMOs especially love to celebrate holidays with their own versions of real life holidays.

There are a lot of games that I want to try out this release season.  We're finally in the opposite of the summer slump.  The holiday release season was kicked off by Halo Reach late last month and is followed by Fable III, The Force Unleashed II, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, and World of Warcraft Cataclysm.  Those are the main games I want to get my hands on in the next couple of months.

Those are just the games on my personal list, there are many other titles hoping to get their fair share of holiday spending.  Playstation Move is out and the Xbox Kinect will be released on November 4th.  Those new motion control systems should both be huge with the younger crowd, if not the hardcore gamers.  Kirby's Epic Yarn, Castlevania Lord of Shadows, Medal of Honor, and Call of Duty: Black Ops are just a few more offerings on the table that should do well at retail.

Virtual worlds and MMOs are gearing up for the holidays with their own celebrations.  World of Warcraft has already had Brewfest and All Hallows Eve is just around the corner.  Most well established MMOs have some form of holiday festivities.

Last night when I logged in to League of Legends I was surprised to find a Halloween tileset for the main 5v5 map as well as all of the lesser minions having pumpkin masks.  It was awesome!  Not only that, but they introduced a new hero as an added benefit.

The holiday season is a great time to be a gamer.  With a mass of new releases and celebrations happening in our favorite virtual worlds which part of holiday gaming are you most looking forward to?

    There are surprisingly few games coming this holiday season that interest me at all. I'll be using the time to catch up on my backlog instead.

    Nice, I hope you have some good games in your backlog. I love the feeling of getting caught it. I always feel like I accomplished something, even though they're just video games.

Latest Board Gaming

Besides video games I also regularly play board games when I'm hanging out with people face to face.  My brother, my wife, and I end up playing a lot of 3 player board games, but sometimes we get other players involved too. I realized I haven't talked much about what I've been playing in the world of board games, so here goes: Ticket to Ride - We own 3 different base versions of Ticket to Ride, 2 expansion sets, and an extra map set.  We love this game.  This is the game that gets the most overall table time when I'm playing board games with friends.  It's super accessible but still holds fun for people who have been playing the game for a long time.  I recommend this as a great beginner board game for anyone. Masquerade - A hidden role game where roles are constantly switching hands.  You're limited in actions on your turn and can only take one action.  This means that a lot of the time you're not entirely sure what role you currently have.

Games of the Year 2022: In Conclusion

This running Games of the Year list has been an interesting experiment.  I decided to start this series right as we were shutting down the Geek to Geek podcast as a way to keep creatively broadcasting some gaming thoughts out into the world.  I learned a few things from sticking with it this year. The main thing I learned is... I just don't have as much desire to broadcast my thoughts out in public as I used to when I started this blog or when I started podcasting.  I still love to have in-depth discussions about current games and general geekery, but I feel less and less need to broadcast those thoughts widely.  Honestly, it's been over a decade of blogging and podcasting at this point.  It would be more surprising if my relationship with the media landscape hadn't  changed.
